Stupid Patent Troll Threatens Your Chance at Robot Sex

Were you looking forward to the robot sex revolution? I’ve got some bad news: a nasty patent troll is on the prowl. The patent in question is US6368268B1 – aka, sex toy connected to a computer network. It’s a wide reaching patent that pretty much covers any sex toy that connects to a computer, and it’s absolutely ludicrous. The full patent title is “Method and Device for Interactive Virtual Control of Sexual Aids Using Digital Computer Networks”, now owned by Tzu Technologies.

The patent was previously owned by HASSEX Inc, and was in fact licensed to a number of sex toy manufacturers such as Kiiroo and makers of the Shockspot. Having changed hands, the new owners of the patent are going after companies who previously failed to licence the nearly 20 year old patent.

The trolling doesn’t end with the absurd generality of the patent claimed though: they also sued Kickstarter, for enabling another company to raise funds for their remote hand holding product.

No, Facebook Didn’t Just Ban “VR Sex Apps” on the Oculus Rift

When Palmer Luckey announced that Rift would not block VR sex apps, users rejoiced:

The rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it, and that’s a big deal.

At a recent pre-E3 press conference, Oculus unveiled the final consumer version of the Rift – but they also briefly showed a new VR storefront for demoing and purchasing VR content. It’s here where the contention lies, as Facebook clarified that apps with sexual content would not be permitted on the store.

New outlets quickly jumped on this statement to claim porn would no longer be allowed on the Rift, thereby dashing the dreams of thousands of perverts around the globe.

Oculus only distributes developer content that meets their terms of service, which forbid pornographic content from being a part of the Oculus Store,

Only problem is – the reporting of all this no VR Sex Apps is largely bullshit. We already knew that adult experiences probably wouldn’t be allowed on any official Rift game store, just as they aren’t currently permitted on Oculus Share, or on Oculus’ Gear VR content store, or on Steam. This isn’t news. Oculus won’t distribute your porn or virtual sex games, but it’s certainly in no position to “block” them from displaying on the device – at least not in it’s current form. That’s like saying Samsung has somehow blocked pornography from being played back on its TVs. In order to do that, the Rift would need to be an entirely closed ecosystem, similar to iOS, which only runs apps from the Oculus approved app store. They’d also presumably ban video players, since those can be used to playback dirty movies.

The Oculus Rift is a display device. If and when that fundamentally changes to being a closed consumer product, you can be damn sure their potential customer base will drop to a fraction of what is now. Until then, I humbly ask media outlets to stop spreading lies – and if you see someone republishing nonsense, call them out on their bullshit.

Sex Toys That Connect to VR Porn: That’s a Thing, Now

Lovense began life as an IndieGogo campaign, though failed to gather their goal funding of $50,000, instead receiving just half. Undeterred, they’ve finally released the first two of what will hopefully be many products: Max, a male masturbator; and Nora, a vibrator.

Of special interest to us though is Max and Nora’s ability to sync with Virtual Real Porn movies. Max has special air pockets on the side that contract with the speed of the actress, while Nora’s rotation speed does the same. Both have vibrations linked to body contact.

Lovense’s devices not only connect to special porn tracks, but also to each other: a form of teledildonics. Designed for long distance relationships, each device is equipped with sensors and a BlueTooth connection so that sensations can be synchronized. Sessions can then be recorded and played back later.

Of course, it can only go so far. We’re intrigued by the air pump contractions on Max, but vibrating toys are so boring: what we’d really like to see is a machine that actually mimics the trusts.

Lovense isn’t the first company to tackle teledildonics on a commercial scale either: RealTouch tried, with a disturbingly terrifying masturbator that could also be linked to special porn tracks, but were forced to stop selling the device at the start of 2014 due to increased manufacturing and licensing costs.

Here’s hoping Lovense doesn’t suffer the same fate. Kiiroo offers a similar pair of devices, though seems to be aimed only at male pleasure given that it’s a one-way communication from the dildo to the masturbator. The Kiiroo device does however go further by using a set of contracting rings, essentially making it a hands-off operation for the guy; as well as linking up with a vast library of (Non-VR) porn videos.

Preliminary reviews of the Lovense products haven’t been so great – with users complaining of connectivity woes and far-too-large penises that can’t possibly fit into the small hole of the Max device – but we’ve reached out to see if we can get our hands on them to judge for ourselves.

For now, it looks like the world of good quality teledildonics is forever just around the corner.

DMM (Digital Media Mart), a Japanese DVD and video streaming service, have released a few 360 panoramic VR porn previews. Put “VR” in quotes because they aren’t stereoscopic, but they’re still worth a quick download. They all feature the same room with a few different porn scenes going on at the same time. You’ll find the 3 short movies here (scroll down the page).

On each movie page, you should see a large, orange download button on the right side.

By default, you may have been presented with an English language version of the site. The download links result in an error unless you switch to the Japanese version of the site. To do so, click the label 日本語 at the top of the screen where the English is currently highlighted in orange. Now the downloads should work.

Yiffalicious, a Furry VR Sex Simulator (In Development)

Finally, what we’ve all been waiting for: virtual horse cocks. Yiffalicious (from the word Yiff) is a no-bullshit furry VR sex simulator currently in development, and it looks incredible. Planned features include:

Model marketplace for importing and selling your furry character creations
Interaction editor, so you can design your own poses and short movies, then publish them for all to enjoy.
Enjoy interactions from the point of view of either character (perfect for VR) as well as third person perspective.
Procedural animations, so you can tweak it exactly how you want and not rely on a limited number of preset animations.
Facial expressions, something often overlooked or badly done in 3D games.

It’s an exciting list of features, and with model imports it’s not hard to imagine the engine could potentially be expanded to cover non-furry interactions too. Clearly, this isn’t going to be the killer VR porn app for everyone, but it’s precisely this kind of niche content that makes VR porn such an exciting opportunity.

Sadly, there’s no demo to download and VR support is promised at a later date after the main app has launched. Still, if you head over to Patreon and show your support with as little as $3/month, they might be more inclined to prioritize a working VR demo.
